Toyota has announced the return of the GR86 Hakone special edition for the 2025 model year, paying homage to Japan's renowned Hakone Turnpike. Set to arrive at Canadian dealerships in Fall 2024, this limited-run model blends classic sports car elements with modern design and performance enhancements.
Distinctive Exterior and Interior Design
The 2025 GR86 Hakone special edition stands out with its Ridge Green exterior colour, complemented by 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels and a colour-keyed duck-tail spoiler. Black accents and Hakone badging further distinguish this model.
Inside, the car features Ultrasuede sport seats with tan leather trim and stitching. A unique Hakone special edition shift knob with bronze accents and a GR special edition plaque add to the exclusive interior ambiance.
Enhanced Performance and Handling
All 2025 GR86 models, including the Hakone edition, will benefit from performance upgrades. The 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder boxer engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota has retuned the shock absorbers and revised throttle mapping to improve handling response and control.
The Hakone special edition comes standard with SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes, further enhancing its performance capabilities. A Torsen limited-slip rear differential is included for improved traction during cornering.
Lightweight Construction and Technology
Toyota has maintained the GR86's lightweight sports car ethos, with the base model weighing just 1,275 kg. The use of aluminum for the hood, front fenders, and roof panel contributes to this low weight.
Inside, drivers will find an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a digital instrument panel. The Hakone special edition and Premium grade feature an eight-speaker audio system, while the Base grade includes a six-speaker setup.
Safety Features and Connected Services
All GR86 models come equipped with Toyota's Active Safety Suite, which includes various driver assistance features. The Star Safety System is also standard, providing additional safety measures such as Vehicle Stability Control and Smart Stop Technology.
Connected Services trials offer features like Safety Connect for emergency assistance, Service Connect for maintenance updates, and Remote Connect for smartphone-based vehicle interaction.
Limited Availability and Pricing
Toyota will produce only 860 units of the GR86 Hakone special edition for North America, with 30 manual transmission models allocated to the Canadian market. Pricing details for the 2025 GR86 lineup, including the Hakone special edition, will be announced later this year.
The 2025 Toyota GR86 Hakone special edition represents a blend of performance, style, and exclusivity, offering enthusiasts a unique take on the popular sports car.
