Three things that make the 2023 Toyota Highlander better than the previous model

The Toyota Highlander has been one of the leaders in the three-row mid-size crossover segment for many years, and the trend looks to continue for the 2023 model year with the addition of a new gas engine, some handy accessibility features and a revamped infotainment system. There’s lots going on here, so let’s dig in!

Powertrain

Chief among these is the addition of a new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That’s more torque than what’s made by the previous version of the car, and all non-hybrid Highlander models get the engine for 2023. You’ve got the great power, but it uses less than 10L/100 km of fuel in the combined cycle. It can also tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is strong for a three-row SUV with four-cylinder power. Better still, the four-cylinder also provides a 50 per cent reduction in NOx and an improvement in CO2 emissions.

Infotainment

Both the Limited and Platinum trims get an all-new infotainment system that’s highlighted by a 12.3-inch glare-reducing optically-bonded display that’s bigger and more responsive than ever before. It’s matched by a 12.3” digital gauge display as well that can be configured four ways: Casual, Smart, Tough and Sporty. A 7” display now comes as standard on the base LE model, up from 4.2” last year.

Audio comes courtesy of an 11-speaker JBL audio system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wireless charging also returns, with the charge pad moved to be more easily accessible to the front passenger.

Accessibility

Power folding mirrors now come as standard on Platinum and Limited models, making the Highlander that much easier to park. Both models also get a standard hands-free liftgate for ’23 – no need to press a keyfob; all that’s required is a kick under the rear bumper to access an easy-load cargo area.
